SUNKEN LIVES Long term assignment in progress on the aftermath of the devastating floods of July 2021 in Southern Belgium
In July 2021, the Vesdre valley, where the river of the same name flows, has been flooded. Torrential rains and poor management of the Vesdre dam caused unprecedented flooding, destroying everything in its way. Dozens of people died and disappeared, and towns and villages along the river were submerged.Thousands of homes are uninhabitable and as many families are now being rehoused while work is carried out to make their homes safe. The return of the families is not expected for several months as the damage is so extensive.
